White-headed Buffalo Weaver

Here’s a weaver that wasn’t featured on the ‘Weaver’ montage back in May 2024, the White-headed Buffalo Weaver (Dinemellia dinemelli). As can be clearly seen, their bill is very similar to that seen on some of the ‘larger finches’ in Canada, but other than that slight similarity, they are not associated. A heavier set member of the weaver family, they are only to be found in a small number of countries in Africa, which includes Tanzania, which is were this shot came from. They are often seen in groups rooting around on the ground for food such as bugs, seeds and fruits and they are particularly fond of beetles. Their fondness of bugs is in part what got them their name – they were first recognized as following the ‘buffalo’ across the savannah and feeding on the insects disturbed by the large bovine, so this was included in their non-latin name.
